On Monday, Google revealed that it has begun introducing Gemini to the Google TV Streamer, taking the place of Google Assistant. According to the company, this update will allow people to interact with their TV using more conversational voice commands to find content and perform other tasks.
As an illustration, users might now say, “I enjoy dramas while my wife prefers comedies. Can you suggest a movie we’d both like?” when searching for films to watch together.
Alternatively, if viewers want to catch up on a series, they could ask, “How did Outlander end last season?” Google also notes that users might inquire, “What’s the latest hospital drama everyone is talking about?”
Google highlights that Gemini for TV isn’t limited to just entertainment; users are able to ask the AI assistant any question, much like they would with Gemini on their smartphones.
For instance, someone could use their TV for educational purposes by requesting Gemini to “Explain why volcanoes erupt to my third grader.” Google adds that Gemini can also walk users through DIY activities or recipes using YouTube videos.
To use Gemini on the Google TV Streamer, simply press the microphone button on your remote control.
Google mentions that the rollout will take place “over the next few weeks” and will be available to users who are 18 years or older.
This update follows Google’s announcement in September about bringing Gemini to select TCL Google TV models. At that time, the company stated that Gemini would also arrive later in the year on the 2025 Hisense U7, U8, and UX series, as well as the 2025 TCL QM7K, QM8K, and X11K models.
Besides the Google TV Streamer, Gemini can also be accessed on the Walmart Onn 4K Pro streaming device.
Monday’s news was expected, as it aligns with Google’s broader initiative to transition from Google Assistant to Gemini across its ecosystem. The company had also shared at CES in January that Gemini would launch on Google TV this year.
