UK Police Investigate New Scam: Fraudsters Steal Approximately $2.8 Million in Bitcoin Through Impersonation
According to Jinse Finance, the North Wales Police Cyber Crime Unit in the UK is investigating a targeted scam: fraudsters impersonated senior law enforcement officers and used fear tactics and urgent pressure to trick victims into logging into their cold wallets via phishing websites and disclosing their mnemonic phrases, resulting in the theft of approximately $2.8 million (£2.1 million) worth of Bitcoin. This case highlights the increasing sophistication of social engineering scams targeting long-term crypto holders. Law enforcement agencies once again remind the public to always verify the authenticity of any calls or messages claiming to be from law enforcement.
