Although Apple’s iPhone already enables users to send texts, make emergency calls, and reach roadside assistance using satellite technology, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the company is developing a range of additional satellite-based capabilities.

Among the new features being developed are an API that would let third-party apps utilize satellite connectivity, an offline version of Apple Maps for navigation without cellular or WiFi access, the ability to send photos through satellite messaging, and enhanced “natural usage” so users can connect to satellites even if their device isn’t aimed directly at the sky.

These enhancements could make iPhones much more practical in areas without standard cellular coverage. Another possible improvement, initially revealed by The Information, may boost 5G service by linking it to satellites for broader network reach.

According to Gurman, the core functionalities will be offered at no cost, while users may need to pay their carriers for premium features. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly assisting its satellite partner Globalstar in upgrading its infrastructure to accommodate these new services.
