Sora can now be accessed on Android devices in the US, Canada, and various other locations

OpenAI’s AI-powered video creation tool, Sora, has now been officially launched for Android users in the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Sora made its debut as an iOS application in September and rapidly climbed to the top of the App Store rankings, reaching over a million downloads within its first week. Now available on Google Play, Sora is anticipated to draw in even more users, which will likely lead to a significant increase in downloads.

The Android release offers all the same capabilities as the iOS version, including the “Cameos” function, which enables users to create videos of themselves engaging in various actions using their own image.

Users can share their videos on a feed similar to TikTok, making it possible to explore and interact with content from others. This move seems to be part of OpenAI’s strategy to strengthen its foothold in the highly competitive short-form video market. The company is positioning itself to compete with industry leaders like Meta, which recently introduced its own AI video feed called Vibes, as well as established platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

Despite its popularity, the app has come under fire for its approach to deepfakes. Following its initial release, some users uploaded inappropriate videos featuring historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr. In response, Sora temporarily halted the creation of content involving Dr. King last month and implemented stricter safeguards.

The company has also responded to criticism over the use of copyrighted characters, such as SpongeBob and Pikachu, by shifting its policy from an “opt-out” to an “opt-in” model for rights holders in the Sora app.

Furthermore, OpenAI is currently engaged in a legal battle with celebrity video platform Cameo over the use of the name “Cameo” for Sora’s main feature.

Looking forward, OpenAI intends to roll out more features for Sora. Planned updates include character cameos, which will let users generate AI videos featuring their pets or even objects. Basic video editing functions are also in development, such as the ability to merge several clips. Additionally, Sora aims to help users personalize their social feeds, emphasizing content from chosen creators rather than a broad audience.
