Two MIT graduate brothers accused of stealing $25 million in cryptocurrency, case set to enter opening statements stage
On October 15, it was reported that two brothers, Anton Peraire-Bueno (25 years old) and James Peraire-Bueno (29 years old), both graduates of MIT, are set to stand trial on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court for an alleged cryptocurrency fraud case. Prosecutors allege that in April 2023, the two stole $25 million in cryptocurrency in just 12 seconds through a complex series of Ethereum blockchain transactions. The indictment describes this "unprecedented" fraud scheme as having been meticulously planned over several months, utilizing the professional skills the brothers developed during their education, and "compromising the integrity of the Ethereum blockchain." Prosecutors stated that before committing the theft, the brothers studied the trading behavior of the victim traders, and afterwards concealed their identities and the whereabouts of the stolen funds through shell companies, private cryptocurrency addresses, and overseas exchanges. The two also searched for keywords such as "how to launder cryptocurrency." Defense attorneys argue that the brothers did not commit fraud, but merely "outsmarted some predatory automated trading bots." Both are currently released on $250,000 bail each, and the trial is expected to last until the first week of November.
