Rivian is updating the R2 SUV’s door handles to enhance safety

Rivian has decided to update the door handle design for its forthcoming R2 SUV following safety feedback from both staff and customers, as reported by Bloomberg News.

In recent years, the company has joined other automakers in adopting electronic door latches. Although this trend offers a more streamlined look and improves aerodynamics, it frequently leads to manual emergency releases being hidden in spots that are difficult to locate.

For the R2, which is set to launch next year, Bloomberg notes that Rivian will relocate the manual interior release to a spot that is “easier to see” and closer to the powered door handles.

This adjustment comes as electronic door handles face increased scrutiny. Bloomberg recently highlighted incidents where Tesla drivers and passengers were trapped inside due to the company’s poorly placed manual releases. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation, and Tesla has announced plans to redesign its system.

Earlier in the year, Ford recalled its Mustang Mach-E and halted sales because the electronic latches could remain locked if the vehicle’s 12-volt battery failed.
