Blockchain for governance and inclusion
The Academy is structured around five core areas: inclusive digital finance, transparent governance, supply chain integrity, climate resilience, and digital identity. Together, these focus points aim to reshape public sector systems by improving accountability, reducing inefficiencies, and expanding access to essential services.
Inclusive digital finance will deliver secure and accessible payment systems, while blockchain-enabled governance will help tackle corruption through tamper-proof records. Supply chain transparency will strengthen procurement processes, climate-focused applications will ensure accountability in climate finance and carbon tracking, and digital identity will provide citizens with trusted credentials to unlock public services.
Setting standards for global adoption
The partnership marks a significant step in positioning blockchain within global policy frameworks. By aligning blockchain with AI and other transformative technologies, the Academy is expected to become a reference model for digital governance worldwide. UNDP views the initiative as an extension of its mission to promote sustainable development and enhance trust in public institutions.
The upcoming launch in Singapore is set to spark new collaborations between policymakers and technology leaders, reinforcing blockchain’s role in shaping the future of cross-border governance and digital transformation.
Beyond governance, the UNDP is also studying how cryptocurrencies, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and stablecoins could advance financial inclusion and human development in underserved regions. In a recent blog post, Kanni Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, emphasized the need for careful research into how digital assets can promote both economic growth and social progress.
