Recently, a Web3 fantasy football game called Football.Fun quickly went viral after launching on Base. A certain KOL stated that he turned $100,000 into $200,000 in just 5 hours, then turned $200,000 into $300,000 in another 11 hours, making a profit of $200,000 in less than a day.
With such a strong wealth effect, what exactly is Football.Fun?
Project Introduction
Football.Fun is positioned as a "on-chain fantasy sports platform" deployed entirely on Base. Players can own and freely trade football player tokens, build fantasy teams, and participate in matches. Player cards can be traded on AMM markets like meme coins, and users acquire player shares by opening player card packs, forming teams. The system automatically calculates points based on real football matches and rewards holders of outstanding players after each weekly event (weekend matches and midweek matches).
The game currently involves top players from the five major European leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1), with each player having a maximum issuance of 25 million shares. Mike Dudas, a partner at 6th Man Ventures, stated that Football.Fun is like "player cards with liquidity added to SoRare," and "this model directly ties into football fan interest, making it easy to attract fan participation."
Launch Performance: Rapid Data Growth
Just two weeks after its launch, Football.Fun's on-chain data has shown explosive growth. According to on-chain data panel statistics, the platform's total value locked (TVL) exceeds $10 million, with over 10,000 cumulative participating wallet addresses, and the platform has collected approximately $1.5 million in transaction fees.
On August 24th, daily trading volume hit a historical high of $14.85 million. Meanwhile, discussions around the #FootballFun hashtag on social media continue to rise, with many players sharing profit screenshots and discussing strategies.
Its platform's total player token market value (i.e., the sum of all player market values) has reached the hundred million dollar level, peaking at 150 million dollars, and currently falling back to 100 million. Players earn profits by trading shares of star players.
Team and Funding
The Football.Fun project was founded by Adam (@AdamFDF_), with no further specific information about the founder disclosed at the moment.
On July 18, 2025, the project announced the completion of a $2 million seed round of funding, led by the investment firm 6th Man Ventures (6MV), with other investors including Devmons, Zee Prime Capital, Sfermion, and The Operating Group, among others.
Mechanism Analysis
Football.fun's economic model differs from traditional game rewards and is more akin to on-chain transaction games. The in-game native transaction currency is "Gold," which is pegged in the Professional mode to Base Chain USDC, where 1 Gold always equals 1 USDC. Players use Gold to purchase player shares, which can only be traded within the game market and cannot be withdrawn directly; selling shares earns players Gold profits.
The platform charges a fixed 5% base fee on each transaction. Additionally, to prevent market impact from large individual sales, the system will introduce a dynamic fee mechanism in cases of significant sell-offs and trading surges (with tax rates increasing for large sell-offs and additional fees during abnormal trading, reportedly up to 25%, as per community feedback).
According to the official introduction, the initial player pack sale raised $2.5 million, with $2 million allocated for liquidity and the remaining $500,000 for marketing. This funding provided initial liquidity for the game's launch. The project's main sources of revenue include: funds invested by players when purchasing player packs and transaction fees generated by player trades in the market. It is important to note that currently Football.Fun has no additional token or dividend design, and players' earnings essentially come from buying low and selling high: buying player shares at a low price and selling them to other players at a higher price to earn the difference in Gold (USDC).
Similar to other "meme coin" projects, the sustainability of this model is questioned. Currently, Football.fun's gameplay does not have a mechanism for direct income flowback to players, and its profitability relies on the continuous influx of new users and market activity. The project's revenue primarily comes from issuance and fees, and the health and long-term viability of this model are subject to controversy.
How to Participate
To get started with Football.fun, you need to prepare a wallet that supports the Base network (such as MetaMask) and connect to the game interface. The game offers two modes: "Free Trial Play (FTP)" and "Pro Edition."
The Trial Play version is open to all users, and upon entry, you will receive 300 Season Points and 3 player packs. After completing the newbie tasks, you can also claim 1100 initial gold coins without investing any real assets. The Pro Edition requires players to pre-deposit USDC on the Base network to the game's address in exchange for an equivalent amount of Gold.
Once you have Gold, you can go to the "Trading" page to purchase shares of any player currently available for sale. When purchasing a player, the game will display information such as the player's team, position, age, upcoming schedule, and performance history. Each player comes with a contract for 4 matches upon purchase (meaning they can participate in 4 rounds). After the contract is used up, you will need to renew it to continue earning points.
It is worth mentioning that the game currently does not have its own "platform token" to hold; all transactions are conducted using Gold (USDC). In other words, the main entry barrier is to spend USDC to purchase player shares (or earn coins through tasks in the free mode) and then share rewards based on team performance during the automatically held season. In summary, anyone can get started with the trial play at zero cost. If you want to participate in large-scale trading in the secondary market and rankings, you will need some funds and research on the game.
Community Feedback and Controversy
Since its launch, Football.Fun has seen high community engagement, with many players sharing their strategies and earnings insights. Some community members have posted guides on how to take advantage of new player issuance prices and profit from trading. In player discussions, apart from listing potential players (such as PSG's rising star, front-runners for the European Golden Ball, etc.), experienced players also advise newcomers to invest moderately and pay attention to the schedule.
However, at the same time, this game has also sparked controversy. Some observers believe that Football.Fun's profit model relies heavily on subsequent player participation. Some community users have even jokingly referred to it as a "football Ponzi scheme." Critics point out that if the hype fades and new players dry up, latecomers' interests may be harmed. Furthermore, because reward distribution is linked to shareholding and match performance, the true fairness of the game is also being debated.
The project's official team has not provided a clear response to these doubts, emphasizing only the mechanics of the game. Overall, Football.Fun demonstrates the vitality of attracting new players but also comes with player concerns about the sustainability of the model. In this rapidly evolving early stage, the market remains cautious about its future.
