U.S. lawmaker and advocate for alternative financial assets Mike Collins has announced that his campaign will accept cryptocurrency donations. The lawmaker, who represents Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, stated that this move is intended to “destigmatize the crypto industry” and allow the United States to move forward.
In a press statement, Collins expressed hope that by accepting donations in digital assets such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), he can encourage reluctant fellow members of Congress to do the same.
“If our nation is going to continue to be competitive in the global financial system, we must adapt. Alternative digital assets—Bitcoin, Ethereum, altcoins, memecoins, etc.—have widespread adoption almost everywhere but in Congress. My campaign’s acceptance today hopefully changes that,” the lawmaker said.
According to the statement, Collins, a lifelong trucker, remains an active cryptocurrency trader and is the “first” member of Congress to trade a memecoin.
The announcement that his campaign will accept cryptocurrencies comes as the Trump administration seeks to move the U.S. away from the anti-crypto policies of the previous administration. As reported by Bitcoin.com News and other media outlets, U.S. regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), have either eased or dropped litigation against crypto firms.
Furthermore, the Trump administration has floated the idea of creating a strategic cryptocurrency reserve, and on March 2, the U.S. leader named cryptocurrencies to be included in the stockpile. Observers believe these moves signal that the U.S. is attempting to position itself as a leader in adopting emerging technologies, something Collins is keen to see happen.
