Key Takeaways

  • Bitcoin has surpassed gold in terms of assets under management in U.S. ETFs.
  • The Bitcoin-to-gold ratio has reached a record high, further emphasizing Bitcoin’s rising value relative to gold.
  • Bitcoin’s increasing prominence challenges gold’s traditional role as a store of value and safe-haven asset.

Bitcoin (BTC) has surpassed gold as the dominant asset in U.S. exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

This unprecedented milestone, achieved in a mere fraction of the time gold ETFs have existed, underscores the growing confidence of institutional and retail investors in the digital currency.

As Bitcoin’s market capitalization continues to soar, it challenges the traditional role of gold as a safe-haven asset.

Bitcoin ETFs Surpass Gold Funds

Bitcoin has overtaken gold as the dominant asset in U.S. ETFs markets.

This achievement, particularly considering the 20-year head start of gold ETFs, highlights the increasing confidence of institutional and retail investors in Bitcoin as a valuable investment.

The Bitcoin ETFs’ assets under management are now at $106.7 billion, while those of gold ETFs stand at $127 billion.

This surge in BTC ETFs is due to several factors, like the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. and the growing interest from financial giants like BlackRock , Fidelity and ARK Invest.

Bitcoin-to-gold Ratio Sets New Record

The Bitcoin-to-gold ratio , which compares Bitcoin’s value to an ounce of gold, hit a record high on Dec. 16, reaching 40.

This milestone reflects Bitcoin’s surging price, surpassing $107,000, while gold remains around $2,650 per ounce.

This ratio highlights Bitcoin’s increasing prominence as a financial asset, challenging gold’s traditional role as a safe haven.

The ratio has only retreated by 0.2% since it reached its new record and, according to market experts, it may rise to 89.

What It Means for BTC vs. Gold

Bitcoin surpassing gold in ETFs AUM marks a generational shift in investor sentiment. Younger, tech-savvy investors are embracing Bitcoin, while traditional investors increasingly view it as a diversification tool.

The approval of Bitcoin spot ETFs in 2024 has further signaled regulatory acceptance, setting the stage for future crypto products.

This milestone raises questions about Bitcoin’s trajectory in the financial system.

According to analyst Andjela Radmilac , while its volatility remains a concern, institutional adoption and regulatory clarity may drive continued growth, predicting greater inflows from traditional markets.

“Bitcoin’s rise reflects its mainstream acceptance, challenging gold’s dominance as a store of value. Bitcoin and gold’s correlation has fluctuated, influenced by macroeconomic conditions and investor sentiment,” the analyst said.

For example, in late 2021, inflation concerns and monetary policy shifts weakened their correlation.

“This dynamic highlights the complexity of these assets and their evolving roles in financial markets,” she added.
