Texas residents sue Marathon Digital over Bitcoin mining noise

Texas residents sue Marathon Digital over Bitcoin mining noise

A group of over two dozen residents from Granbury, Texas, has filed a lawsuit against Marathon Digital, alleging that the noise from its nearby Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) mining facility has caused significant disruptions.

The lawsuit, filed on October 4 in Hood County Court, claims that the noise has been “intolerably loud” and constitutes a nuisance to those living near the site.

Residents claim the constant noise and vibrations from Marathon’s Bitcoin mining operations have caused serious health issues, including fatigue, headaches, memory problems, and hearing loss.

Some even reported worsened pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure.

The plaintiffs state that they are unable to escape the noise, even within their own homes.

The lawsuit asserts that the operations not only interfere with residents’ peace but have also led to higher electricity bills and diminished property values.

According to the suit, the plaintiffs claim that the noise is a continuous source of “extreme discomfort and annoyance” and negatively impacts their quality of life.

The group seeks a permanent injunction to stop the noise pollution and demands compensation for the damages incurred.

The plaintiffs are represented by Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law firm.

Rodrigo Cantú, a senior attorney with the firm, stated, “Our clients want Marathon to take immediate action to mitigate their noise pollution or shut down operations altogether.”

Marathon Digital, which took over the mining site in January 2023, has yet to comment on the lawsuit.

The Granbury Bitcoin mining facility, initially constructed by Compute North Holdings in April 2022, currently has a hashrate of 4.3 exahashes per second (EH/s) according to Marathon’s recent earnings report.

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price was $62,744.92.
