SEC Enforcement Chief Gurbir Grewal to Leave This Month, Sanjay Wadhwa to Take Over
On October 3, Gurbir Grewal, head of the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) Enforcement Division, will step down this month. Current deputy head Sanjay Wadhwa will become acting head from October 11th.
Grewal, who has served in the position since July 2021, said he was proud of his accomplishments during his tenure and thanked Chairman Gary Gensler for his support, who also praised Grewal's dedication to protecting investors and ensuring marketplace compliance.
Under Grewal's leadership, the SEC issued 35 cryptocurrency enforcement actions in 2022 and a total of 40 in 2023. The Enforcement Division nearly doubled the size of its Crypto Assets and Networks unit in May 2022, bringing the total team to 50 people.
Wadhwa has been with the SEC since 2003, serving as a senior deputy director in the New York Enforcement Division and as a deputy director across the division for eight years.
