Bukele warns of 'New Dark Age'

President Nayib Bukele addressed the United Nations General Assembly, emphasising El Salvador's progress during his first term while warning of a potential "New Dark Age" for the world.

Bukele highlighted his country’s economic revival, improved personal security, and success in combating gang violence as key achievements. He contrasted these advancements with what he described as the growing problems in the Western world, including increasing crime, homelessness, and social media censorship.

Bukele claimed that while Salvadorans now enjoy freedom in their streets, many cities in the so-called free world are grappling with severe social issues.

He criticised governments that have censored citizens or arrested individuals for their social media posts, using these examples to illustrate what he sees as global regression.

According to Bukele, El Salvador’s own history of challenges has given its people the ability to recognise the signs of societal decay and an approaching dark period for humanity.

"This acceleration means that we are approaching a dark turning point. We are facing a new dark era of humanity," Bukele stated.

He further explained that while El Salvador may not be able to stop this shift, it could serve as a “shelter” for those seeking refuge from the impending global instability.

Bukele concluded by expressing hope for humanity’s future, saying, "It may be too late to avoid the dark times facing our world today, but it is not too late to build an ark and weather the storm. May God bless mankind."
