2009 Bitcoin whale moves 5 BTC to Kraken while holding $77 million
An early Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) whale has resurfaced, transferring 5 BTC to the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, according to Arkham Intelligence.
This long-time holder still retains a significant 1,215 BTC, valued at approximately $77 million.
The whale’s Bitcoin stash dates back to the early days of Bitcoin mining in 2009, shortly after the cryptocurrency’s launch.
Arkham Intelligence revealed the whale's activity on social platform X, stating, "A Bitcoin whale holding $77M in BTC mined in Bitcoin’s first two months just moved 5 BTC to Kraken."
The whale’s Bitcoin was mined in February and March 2009, just one month after Bitcoin’s inception.
This movement follows a similar pattern seen recently, with 250 BTC transferred from addresses holding five block rewards from 2009—the first time such early rewards had been spent in over a decade.
Arkham highlighted the long dormancy of this whale’s Bitcoin holdings.
After several transactions between 2011 and 2014, the funds were left untouched for almost ten years, during which their value soared from $474,000 to over $80 million.
"This whale woke up around three weeks ago and has moved 10 Bitcoin to Kraken in three separate transactions," Arkham added.
The sudden activity from early Bitcoin whales has sparked curiosity among onchain analysts and market watchers.
At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price was $64,371.04.
