PANews reported on May 31 that DMM Bitcoin, a crypto exchange under the Japanese DMM.com Group, issued an announcement stating: "Around 13:26 (Japan time) on May 31, 2024, we detected unauthorized outflow of Bitcoin (BTC) from our wallet. Although we have taken measures to prevent unauthorized leakage, we have also implemented restrictions on the use of certain services to ensure additional security."

DMM Bitcoin also stated: "The details of the loss are still under investigation, but the current situation is as follows: Regarding the outflow of crypto assets, the amount of Bitcoin illegally leaked from our wallet was found to be 4,502.9 BTC (equivalent to approximately 48.2 billion yen, approximately US$300 million). We will purchase Bitcoin equivalent to the outflow with the support of the group company and guarantee all Bitcoin funds held by customers. DMM Bitcoin has now restricted the following functions: new user account opening, crypto asset withdrawal, suspension of spot trading buy orders, suspension of new leveraged trading position orders (only settlement orders are accepted). Matters regarding the resumption of service will be notified separately."
