Federal prison counselor: expect SBF to serve at least 19 years in federal prison
On March 29, former FTX Dean Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced in federal court to 25 years in prison for criminal participation in the fraudulent and criminal activities of FTX. According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Bankman-Fried may have his sentence automatically reduced by 15 percent, or 3.75 years, for being sentenced for more than one year. However, this reduction may be added back if he has serious bad behavior in prison. The federal prison system is extremely strict and other sentence reduction possibilities are limited, even in a best-case scenario, to an additional two years. Under the First Step Act, he may be able to have his sentence reduced by up to an additional year if he behaves well in prison, or by up to a year if he can demonstrate a preliminary medication refill problem and receives treatment in prison. Thus, in a best-case scenario, Bankman-Freed is expected to serve at least 19 more years in federal prison.
