A U.S. judge ordered Ryder Ripps and others to pay Yuga Labs $9 million in final judgment
US District Judge John F. Walter ordered Ryder Ripps and Jeremy Cahen to pay nearly $9 million in seized profits, fines, legal fees, and other costs to Yuga Labs in the RR/BAYC infringement case. As part of the ruling, Ripps and Cahen must also relinquish their NFTs within the next two weeks and transfer any infringing intellectual property (including domain names and smart contracts) to Yuga Labs.
In June 2021, Yuga Labs sued the "RR/BAYC" NFT series for infringement, accusing them of using original BAYC images to produce and sell a large number of counterfeit NFTs under the "RR/BAYC" series, which led to the devaluation of BAYC NFTs. Ripps had previously argued that the lawsuit was an attack on his freedom of speech and stated that he would settle the case for no less than $100 billion. In April of this year, a US judge ruled that the RR/BAYC imitation had infringed on Yuga Labs' copyright.
