The Chairman of the U.S. SEC issues a statement on the official SEC Twitter account being hacked
On January 14th, according to The Block, the US SEC issued a statement regarding the hacking incident of its official Twitter account. In a statement by SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, the agency claimed that "an unauthorized individual gained access to the SEC's official Twitter account by gaining control over a phone number associated with that account." It may be a SIM card swap attack, which is a common form of Twitter account hijacking that can be prevented through multi-factor authentication. In the statement, Gary Gensler wrote: "Commission staff are still assessing the impact of this incident on the agency, investors, and markets, including concerns about the security of SEC social media accounts." Gary Gensler also noted that the agency is cooperating with law enforcement agencies for further investigation into this matter.
